Chapter Six

Benji

I slept over. But…we didn’t get much sleep. Three times. We had sex. I can’t barely think about it without my cock asking for more. But then I stop myself.

Is this how I started with Carmen? I don’t want to compare relationships, but my brain tells me the past shouldn’t be repeated. And my heart listens. And Violet’s got a hill of a past to get over as well.

Maybe a one-night stand is what we both needed to reset. Reset our brains and our hearts?

But when I look over at her, I shake off the questions because I know. We fit together. Our pieces clicked in my mind. And a puzzle became a picture. A clear and brilliant picture.

Now if I can help her to see how perfect that picture looks.

She rolls over to face me. “Hey…”

I kiss her puffy lips softly. Mine are feeling a little bruised, so I imagine she’s the same, but worth it.

Totally worth it.

“Wanna go get some—”

The doorbell buzzes frantically.

“Wait here.” She grabs her robe and I want to follow her downstairs, but I don’t even have my socks on before she’s out the door.

I’m pulling my T-shirt over my head when she’s back in the room.

“Shit. Shit…I’m screwed.” Violet runs around, pulling clothes back on.

“What’s wrong, baby?”

“It’s my ex and my son and your Jeep is in the driveway.”

The fears radiate off of her in crashing waves. She’s going back under. I just got her head above water where she wasn’t grabbed by the undertow of her past and now, she’s returned to the depths.

I step in front of her. “Hey, we’re adults.”

“No, he’ll take Ryder from me. He’ll say I’m a bad mother.”

“Are you a bad mother?”

She pulls her sweatshirt over her head. “No, of course not. I mean, I had a job to do and I did it and it took me away from my family. He seems to think that made me unfit.”

“But it didn’t. Did you trust him with Ryder?”

“Yes.”

“Then why doesn’t he trust you?”

She stills. “I don’t know.”

“Seems that maybe he’s the one with the issues, Violet. And he’s making you drown—acting all frantic and jumping when he wants you to—because he likes getting the best of you.”

The doorbell rings again. She picks up her phone and texts, slowing her movements. More deliberate. More in the moment.

I don’t see the text, but by the soft lift of the corner of her lips, I can tell that she’s given him the details of how this will proceed.

She walks to me and sets a soft kiss against my lips. “How did you know what I needed?”

“Because we’re a puzzle…”
